The Faculty of Law
The University of the Western Cape is situated next to a nature reserve, six kilometres from Cape Town International Airport and 20 kilometres from central Cape Town. The Faculty of Law is housed in its own building on the eastern side of the main campus. In addition to LLB and coursework LLM and MPhil programmes, the Faculty offers LLM, MPhil, PhD and LLD degrees by thesis as well as various certificate and outreach programmes.
The Faculty currently has 1 579 students out of 15 665 students registered at the University, and 40 established academic posts. It cooperates in various fields with the faculties of the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch and has various international partnerships, some of the most active being with the universities of Utrecht, Ghent, Leiden, Humboldt zu Berlin and Missouri, as well as Paul Cézanne University in Aix-en-Provence and Howard University in Washington D.C.
A number of institutes form part of the Faculty:
The Community Law Centre is a research and advocacy centre focusing on democracy, local government, women’s rights, human rights and children’s rights. It also presents the LLM programme in Constitutional Litigation.
The Legal Aid Clinic offers legal services to indigent clients, specialising in cases involving gender, land and housing issues.
The Social Law Project conducts research and training in labour and social security law, both on and off campus.
The Unit for International Economic Law, established in conjunction with the Centre for Business Law at the University of the Free State, is building resources and academic capacity in the area of international economic and trade law.
